Western Oblast of Ukraine

The emerald forests of the Carpathian Mountains, blossoming alpine meadows-polonyny, swift-flowing rivers, blue lakes and clean salubrious air — all this is western Ukraine, a paradise for tourists, travellers and athletes all year round. There are 5 state museums in the oblasts.

Zakarpatska Oblast

It is located in the geographical centre of Europe at the junction of Ukraine with four neighbouring countries — Romania, Hungary, Poland and Slovak Republic. A large part of its territory is mountains and flat hills, covered with oak and coniferous forests, and alpine meadows. The highest point is Mount Hoverla (2061 m). This is a land of swift flowing rivers — the Tysa, Borzhava and Latorytsa, as well as small mountain lakes among which is Synevyr, rightly considered to be a gem of the Carpathians.
Zakarpatska Oblast has a lot of natural recreation resources, a leading place among which is occupied by natural mineral water. 400 mineral springs with a diverse content of chemicals have been opened here.

Uzhhorod

This ancient city was mentioned in the 9th century chronicles. Tourists from many countries are attracted by the 8th-16th c.c. fortress-castles, 12th century Horianska Rotunda, 17th century Exultation of the Cross Latin Cathedral, ruins of the 8th century Nevytskiy Castle, as well as by a large number of rare trees and flowers, giving it the appearance of a city within a garden.

Mukacheve

It is located in the picturesque Latorytsa River valley. Towering over the city on Zamkova Hill is the marvellous structure of the 9th-16th c.c. Mukacheve Castle, the thick walls of which repeatedly repelled enemy attacks.

Rakhiv

A memorial sign has been erected in the geographical centre of Europe which runs not far from the city. This is one of favourite and often visited places by tourists.

Khust

The city is famous for its unique beauty. Snow-white flowers burst into blossom in the second half of April not far from the city in the Narcissus Valley Preserve.

Ivano-Frankivska Oblast

It is located in the north eastern part of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Its natural landscapes cannot even be compared to alpine scenes. The banks of the Dniester, Prut and Cheremosh rivers are full of romance and beauty, and their clear waters are rich in fish.
Clean mountain air, beautiful landscapes, picturesque slopes of the Carpathians in summer and winter attract many tourists from Ukraine as well as from foreign countries. The oblast has 8 State museums and preserves.

Ivano-Frankivsk

It is oblast centre, its history begins with a small village, which stood on the trade route from Lviv to the reaches of the Danube. Cosy and emerged in greenery, this city is famous for its architectural monuments dating back to different epochs, and a big collection of nature study museums.
Interesting tours begin from Ivano-Frankivsk.

Museum of History and Architecture in the village of Manyava

The expositions of the museum are housed in the famous Manyavsky Skyt Monastery, the complex of which is a 17th century monument of architecture.

Drevniy Halych (Ancient Halych) National Preserve

The preserve includes the 10th-12th c.c. ancient settlement of Halych, unique 12th-13th century architectural monuments, Museum of the Ancient History of Halych, Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life in the picturesque landscape-preserve area on river banks.

Specimens of Hutsul and Pokutia applied decorative art are on display The museum collection is made up of more than 20,000 items on display in 20 halls.

Kosiv

It is a famous city, centre of Hutsul folk handicrafts: wood carving, weaving, processing of leather and metal, ceramics and embroidery. Tourists can take home original souvenirs made by local craftsmen.

Boating

In spring boating fans gather on the Cheremosh and Prut rivers. From the upper reaches of the mountain rivers they sail the rapid spring waters on kayaks rafts and inflated boats. Lovers of adventure can try their luck along the famous slalom route on the Prut River, near the city of Yaremcha. But this is not the route for the weak and inexperienced.
We invite you to take part in a truly masculine sport — the taming of the strong and noble “beast” — the marine element.

Vorokhta, Slavske and Yablunytsia

These towns are famous for their excellent alpine skiing routes. Biathlon, slalom, free-style, forty-, seventy-, and ninety-metre ski jumps await people who are fond of active rest and athletes. Shops where they can hire skiing equipment are at their service.

Lvivska Oblast

It is located in the eastern foothills of the Carpathians. Not many regions of the world can boast of such an abundance of natural factors — numerous rivers, ponds, broad-leaved and coniferous forests giving way to beautiful alpine meadows.

Lviv

Oblast centre founded in the middle of the 8th century by the Halych-Volyn Prince Danylo Halytskiy was named in honor of his son Lev.
Lviv is a huge open air museum — the State Historical and Architectural Preserve unites many monuments of culture and folk architecture dating back to different epochs and peoples; the most famous being: the 8th century St. Nicholas Church, 14th-20th century Armenian Cathedral, complex of buildings of the 17th century, St. Bernard Monastery, 18th century St. George Cathedral, 14th-19th century Ploshcha Rynok (Market Square) architectural ensemble, the 16th-17th century ensemble of the Assumption Cathedral, Lychakiv Cemetery, the burial place of outstanding historians and men of culture of Ukraine, and many others.

Lviv is a city of architectural masterpieces, many museums and unique monuments of history and culture.

After a sightseeing tour of Lviv, tourists can take a trip to Drohovychi (13th-17th century churches and cathedrals), Sambir (ensemble of 17th century buildings of the St. Bernard Monastery and collegium of Jesuits), Zhovkva (churches, synagogues and cathedrals), Urych (the Tustan State Historical and Cultural Preserve, an ancient Rus settlement of the 10th-13th centuries, village of Nahuevychi (historical and cultural preserve in the homeland of Ukrainian poet Ivan Franko).

Truskavets

The famous balneological resort Truskavets lies hidden in a quiet green corner of the Ukrainian Carpathians. This resort is very popular. Concentrated on its territory and vicinity are diverse types of mineral springs. But everyone who comes to Truskavets does so for the sake of drinking the famous Naftusia. He who understood the taste of this medicinal water, understands the value of his health.

Chernivetska Oblast

Located in the south western part of Ukraine it is known under the name of Bukovyna. Its territory has diverse natural landscapes: blue summits of the Carpathians and picturesque foothills change into broad plains between the Dniester and Prut rivers. Six state museums have been opened on the territory of the oblast.

Chernivtsi

This city impresses travellers, tourists and guests of this wonderful land first and foremost by its architectural ensembles in the old part of town, priceless gems of architecture of different styles: Byzantine, Baroque and Gothic.

Khotyn

This city is famous for its monuments of archaeology, history and culture, primarily for the 11th-18th century Khotyn Fortress the walls of which saw fierce battles. One of the biggest battles was the 1621 Khotyn Battle when united detachments of Slavs defeated a 150,000-strong Turkish Army which at that time was considered unconquerable, and saved the peoples of West Europe from slavery. A decisive role in this battle was played by the 40,000-strong Ukrainian Cossack Army.

Podvirne

There is a unique cave in this village “Popelyushka” (Cinderella) which has no analogue in the world. The three-layered underground galleries run a length of 40 kilometres. The underground labyrinths of the cave attract tourists and speleologists from many countries of the world.

Khmelnytska Oblast

It is located in the western part of Ukraine. Picturesque forest-steppe landscapes give way to beautiful river banks scenes of the Dniester, Yuzhniy Buh and Prypiat rivers. There are 5 State museums and preserves in the oblast.

Kamianets-Podilskiy

The city’s State Historical and Cultural Preserve has 100 monuments of architecture of different epochs and styles. The collection of the preserve amounts to 123,000 museum expositions, including an archaeological collection, collections of coins, medals, orders, icons, settings and crosses. Kamianets-Podilskiy takes third place in Ukraine as to the number of monuments of history and architecture.
The architectural ensemble of the city is a beautiful example of a single historical unity. In 1997, the priceless monuments of Kamianets-Podilskiy were placed under the protection of UNESCO.

Medzhybizh

ISRAEL BEN ELIZER BAAL SHEM TOVA, the founder of Hasidism, a religious movement in Judaism, lived in this city in the first half of the 18th century. He was laid to rest in the Jewish Cemetery, buried in which were many of his associates and followers. Every year thousands of pilgrims come to Medzhybizh from many countries of the world. The city is also famous for the complex of buildings of the marvellous 14th-16th century Syniavsk Castle.

Volynska Oblast

This world of generous nature, unique beauty of the Polissia villages, glorified by legends and songs, lies in the basin of the south tributaries of the Prypiat and West Buh rivers. There are 6 State museums and preserves on the territory of the oblast.

Lutsk

It is the oblast centre of Volyn. The State Historical and Architectural Preserve, made up of a complex of buildings of the 12th-17th c.c. Lutsk Castle, 14th-18th c.c. cathedrals, monasteries and churches, and a mysterious underground labyrinth of the old town are located here.

Volodymyr-Volynskiy

It is an ancient city, former political, economic and cultural centre of Kyivan Rus. Tourists will see a wonderful architectural ensemble of the 10th-14th c.c. town, ruins of defence ramparts of the ancient city of Volodymyr.

Shatskiy National Natural Park

The Shatski lakes are called the gem of Volynska Oblast (more than 30 lakes), among which is the deepest lake of Ukraine — Svytiaz. There is no more suitable place for rest and recreation, fishing, photography and access to wonderful Ukrainian nature.

Ternopilska Oblast

Pochayivska Lavra

The majority ofthe tourists make it a must to visit the Pochayivska Lavra (16th-17th c.c.), the largest Orthodox sacred place of Volyn and the second after the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The Lavra houses sacred objects revered by Christians the world over: a footprint of the Holy Mary with medicinal water, her wonder-working icon and relic of Saint Job. The marvellous architectural ensemble of the Pochayivska Lavra makes a big impression on tourists.
