Southern Oblast of Ukraine

Zaporizka Oblast

It is located in the southern part of Ukraine. Its area is criss-crossed by rivers and gullies in the north and it gradually turns into lowlands toward the south and is washed by the waters of the Sea of Azov. There are 20 museums and preserves on the territory of the oblast.

Zaporizhia

It is an industrial, scientific and cultural centre of the oblast.The Dnipro Hydro-Electric Power Station (Dniproges), built in 1932, divides the city into two parts — the old and the new and stimulates the development of the Zaporizhia industrial complex made up of more than 300 industrial enterprises.

Khortysia National Preserve

It is located on the outskirts of Zaporizhia. This is the location of the famous Zaporizhian Sich, a legendary military fortress of the defenders of the Ukrainian land, the cradle of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Included in the preserve are the Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks, and the folklore equestrian theatre. The beautiful landscape of this Preserve and its rich flora and fauna are being preserved.
Kamiana Mohyla (Stone Grave) State Historical
and Archaeological Museum

This unique monument of ancient history, culture and nature is situated in Zaporizka and Donetska oblasts. Included in the preserve are grottoes and caves with many petroglyphs — specimens of primitive art, museums and landscapes which display more than 3000 ancient inscriptions

Berdiansk

This city is rightly called the gem of the northern Azov Sea area. It is a climatic balneological and medicinal mud resort. The Sea of Azov attracts tourists by its unique beauty. Its irresistible charm and magnetic force can be felt everywhere.

Mykolaivska Oblast

It is located in the southern part of Ukraine. The north of the oblast is broken by ravines, gorges and valleys, and the coastal area of the Black Sea is indented by limans. Four State museums and preserves function in the oblast.

Mykolayiv

It was founded in 1789 in honour of the capture of the Turkish Ochakiv Fortress in 1788 on Day of St. Nicholas (Mykola in Ukrainian). Today Mykolayiv is a large ship-building centre.

Ochakiv

The city of Ochakiv is located 70 km from Mykolaiv where the waters of the Dnipro and Buh flow into the Black Sea, The history of the city is very ancient and rich. Discovered during archaeological diggings were Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds, and traces of ancient Slav settlements. Greek city-colonies were founded in the 6th-5th century B.C. in the north Black Sea coastal area. The largest of these was Olbia, the remains of which were discovered not far from Ochakiv. Today this is the site of the Olbia State Historical and Archaeological Preserve. Included in the Preserve are the ruins of the Greek town of Borysthenida, located on the Berezan Island. At the end of the 18th century Ochakiv was captured by troops under the command of A. Suvorov, a heroic event dating back more than 180 years. Nevertheless some witnesses of those far off days remain. Found on the Kyburnsk Sandspit, in the city and outskirts, were traces of ancient fortifications, underground passages, and part of the rampart. These historic places are of great interest for tourists and archaeologists.

Khersonska Oblast

It is located in the southern part of Ukraine in the Steppe Region, in the basin of the lower reaches of the Dnipro. Four state museums and numerous preserves have been opened for tourists.

The territory of present day Khersonska Oblast was inhabited more than 20,000 years ago. In ancient and medieval times the Scythians, Sarmatians, Pechenegs and Polovtsi roamed these steppes. The Gilea Lower Dnipro Sands are a sacred place of the Scythians, one of the myths about Hercules is connected with this region. Thousands of burial mounds are scattered throughout the Kherson steppes. Kherson Oblast is a land of Cossack glory. The ruins of Cossack Sich settlements and the grave of Kostia Hordienko, the last of their commanders, can be found in the village of Kamenska Sich.

Kherson

It is a large oblast transport, industrial and cultural centre.
The city with a rich past can boast of dozens of unique historical, architectural and natural masterpieces. It preserves the memory of outstanding people, who created its history, glory and culture: H. Potemkin, F. Ushakov, A. Suvorov, I. Hannibal and others.

Askania Nova

In 1828, the German Duke Ketensky of Anhalt founded Askania Nova, a farmstead named in honour of his country estate in Germany. Later the farmstead went over to German settlers Faltz Fein. In 1874 Frederick Faltz Fein founded a zoo here, and in 1887 a dedrological park.

Today Askania Nova is a world famous preserve, the only place on the continent with an absolutely virgin steppe, on the expanses of which wild animals from Africa, Australia and South Africa graze.

Black Sea Biosphere Preserve

This is a vast area of water with hidden islands. More than 600 species of plants and diverse animal kingdom have found their habitat here. But the main riches of the preserve are birds. From May to November tourists can make unique excursions to this bird island.

Odeska Oblast

It is located in the south western part of Ukraine. A combination of marine and steppe climate, a large number of sunny days, the Black Sea, salt reservoirs-limans with medicinal mud, abundance of fruit and vegetables — all this is Odeska Oblast, in which 11 State museums and preserves are open for tourists.

Odesa

It is one of the biggest port cities of Ukraine, the southern gate of the country.
The biography of Odesa is full of historic events, which are preserved in the names of streets, squares, boulevards and in the numerous monuments of history and culture. Many roads lead to the hospitable, optimistic and picturesque city of Odesa. Guests like to visit the Stara Odesa (Old Odesa) State Historical and Cultural Preserve with its unique ensemble of 19th century buildings in Primorskiy Boulevard, the famous Potyomkin stairway, world renown Odesa Opera, monument to Duc de Richelieu, the founder of the city, as well as the many churches, synagogues, Protestant Churches, palace complexes and museums. Not every city has such a rich literary biography. Connected with Odesa are the names of many talented writers. Thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the shores of the blue Black Sea and to the eternally young city inhabited by the most cheerful and sharp-witted people, a city which one cannot miss visiting — Odesa.

Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky

The city was known at the beginning of our era as Tyras, a Greek and later a Roman colony.
Tourists will visit the most monumental fortifications built in Ukraine, the 12th-15th century Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky (Akerman) Fortress. Included are 15th-17th c.c. church, ancient settlements of the Scythians, Greeks and Genoese.

Izmail

It is a city in which a large number of churches and monumental architectural monuments are preserved. Of interest is a visit to the Storm of Izmail Diorama and the museum of the Russian military leader, A. Suvorov.
And naturally, Odeska oblast includes a famous resort and recreational zone of national significance. The resorts of Kuialnyk and Carolyna-Bugaz are famous beyond the borders of Ukraine.
