Health Resorts in Ukraine

Ukraine has a wide diversity of natural health-improvement resources, many of them being unique. Among the latter are the Crimean south coast with its subtropical climate and evergreen vegetation, hydrosulfuric spas, Truskavets' mineral water Naftusya, Kuyalnik's (a place near Odesa) medicinal mud and many others. Health centers of Ukraine provide treatment for almost all diseases. The specific geographical, geological and hydrological patterns predetermined all possible types of resorts in Ukraine: balneal (based on mineral waters, both silt and peat), mud-baths (mineral water and medicinal mud), climatic, and their various combinations: mineral waters and climate; climate, mineral waters and mud.

Tourists visiting Ukraine may as well improve their health. What follows is a short depict of Ukraine's regions particularly famous for their health resorts, experienced and skilled physicians and high level of services.

Crimea is one of the unique places on earth, a nature's generous gift of ample curative and health-improving facilities. The most popular is the southern coast with the world-famous Yalta-megapolis resort in its center. Stretched over dozen kilometers it comprises many a big town like Alushta and Alupka and a chain of smaller ones: Gurzuf, Partenit, Livadia, Gaspra, Koreiz, Miskhor, Simeiz, Foros. These resorts are situated in the area of excellent climatic conditions. Subtropical vegetation, proximity of the sea and chain of mountains protecting the coast, all this provides settled weather conditions which are easy to adapt to. The salubrious ionized air, saturated with oxygen and phytoncids help cure patients with specific respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological diseases etc. Yet it isn't only plenty of sunshine, golden beaches, celebrated resorts that brought the southern coast its world fame, it is also the palace of Livadia, palaces-museums of Alupka and Massandra and other marvels of architecture that have essentially became a natural embellishment of the picturesque landscape. Tours to Ai-Petri peak, Uchan-Su waterfall, the Nikitsky Botanical Gardens, Massandra Park, yacht and boat cruises on the sea enjoy the same popularity among tourists.

The western coast houses Evpatoria and Saki spas of mineral water, salt and mud lakes. These resorts belong to the vast area with curative facilities where the main health-improving factors are the sunshine and sea, air and sand, brine and mud of the salt lakes, as well as mineral water of the hot springs. The population from the town of Saki is sure to have known about the unique curative qualities of the local mud, that can be found nowhere else in the world, from time immemorial, which is witnessed by the manuscripts of Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar (ca 80 BC). These resorts provide successful treatment for diseases of locomotary, nervous, gynaecological systems and diseases of skin.

Feodosia is situated on the southeastern coast of the Peninsula and is known for its shallow seashore, nice sand beaches, mineral water and medicinal silt. You will always keep fond memories about your time of rest and recreation in the Crimea!

Priazovie (Land near the Azov Sea) has been long recognized as the climatic resort.

Shallow and warm, with its rich biodiversity, the Azov Sea near either Kerch or Berdyansk, charms visitors with its incomparable beauty. The sea air saturated with bromine and iodine together with herbs flavours from the steppe is a major factor in training and curing of neuroendocrine, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It helps lift up your spirit and vigour. Most of the health resorts in the south of Ukraine are open all the year round. In winter one may enjoy sun, mud and seawater bath there as well.

Zakarpattya (the western Carpathians)region is another major rest and recreation area rich in natural and health-improving resources. Splendid climate, mountain air and mineral water create perfect conditions for recreation and health-improving. Spas and tourist camps are situated in the most picturesque corners of the land: in the river-valleys, near lakes with crystal clear water, at mountains foothills, surrounded by wild forest.

The main curative factor of the region is springs of hydrocarbonate-sodic and hydrocarbonate-chloride-sodic mineral water. Among the most popular brands of mineral waters produced there are Polyana kvasova, Polyana kupel, Luzhanska. Some of the springs can be referred to as rare or even unique which brings the same status to the resorts based on them. For instance the Kvasy spa water containing arsenic can be found also found only in Germany and the island of Sakhalin (Russia). High in the mountains, near the scenery Synevir Lake there is a spring of Soymy, the unique water of its kind in Ukraine. The water of the Synyak spa is particular rather in terms of its biological then chemical origin. So far there are more than 400 mineral springs of various chemical contents in Zakrpattya region, wells including. Today Golubinoye, Polyana, Soymy, Sinyak, Kvasy and other spas have been widely recognised abroad. Curative natural factors and up-to-date medical facilities allow successful treatment of the digesting diseases as well as those of metabolism, cardiovascular, nervous and locomotary systems. Zakarpattya is criss-crossed with tourist itinararies offering the travellers pleasant meetings with remarkable history and nature of the land: old-time town of Uzhgorod, Rakhiv, the castle of Mukachiv, alpine meadows or mountains tops.

The green hills of the eastern Carpathians lapped a balneal spa Truskavets, a small Ukrainian town often referred to as "pearl of the Prykarpattya (eastern part of the Carpathians)". It won this title owing to the numerous underground springs that deliver healthy water both for internal and external use. The most popular spring is Naftusya which slightly smells of hydrogen sulphide and is a bit of earth-oil to the taste. It contains almost all microelements, various gases and microorganisms. Naftusya is a unique liquid of its kind and possesses a wide scope of curative properties. Low mineralization, active ions and organic components positively effect digesting system, help clean the intestine and kidneys, cause antiphlogistic effect. Today Truskavets is believed to be one of the best balneal spas of Ukraine. Morshin is no less famous resort of the Prykarpattya, situated in a beautiful valley among the pine and leafy forest. That's why this land was destined to turn into rest and recreation, and health-improving region. The water of Khmelnyk belongs to hydrocarbonate-chloride-sodic type with high percentage of manganese in it, which proves its value from the point of view of its balneal properties. The resort provides treatment of locomotary, cardiovascular, digesting and nervous systems as well as metabolism and skin diseases.

We have presented most well-known and popular resorts of Ukraine. Yet, there are many other health-improving facilities all throughout Ukraine, among which are Slavyansk, Slavyanohorsk resorts, Berezovski mineral waters and resorts of Volyn region, just to name a few. Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, also has a great many of health-improving facilities in its vicinity.
