Eastern Oblast of Ukraine

Kharkivska Oblast

It is located in the northeastern part of Ukraine on the border of two landscape zones — Forest-Steppe and Steppe. Kharkivska Oblast is a big industrial, agricultural, scientific and cultural region of Ukraine. This land is the famous Slobidska Ukraine or Slobozhanshchyna. There are 15 State museums and preserves in this oblast.

Kharkiv

This is a powerful centre of tractor, turbine and tank building, automatic space flight control systems, with a huge scientific potential and a population of 1.5 mln.
Kharkiv was the place where the nucleus of lithium was first split, where achievements were reached in theory of superconductivity, and where the first radio telescope, and the basis of the theory of plasma fluctuations were developed.

For sightseers the city offers interesting 17th-19th century architectural monuments (cathedrals, churches, synagogues), and expositions in Kharkiv museums of history and art.
Of no less interest for tourists are the famous centres of culture of Slobidska Ukraine — the Sviatohirskiy, Lebedynskiy, Kuriazhskiy, and Zmiyvskiy monasteries, and others.

Sharivka

The city can boast of one of the best monuments of landscape architecture in Eastern Ukraine. The ensemble includes a marvellous 19th century palace in the pseudogothic style and a picturesque park with 300-year-old oaks.
Donetska Oblast

It is located in the south-eastern part of Ukraine on the Donets Ridge, Azov Heights and part of the lower Dnipro area. In the south it is washed by the waters of the Sea of Azov. There are 20 State museums and preserves in the oblast

Donetsk

It is a large industrial scientific and cultural centre, with a highly developed heavy industry: coal, metallurgy and machine-building. Today Donetsk is becoming a Mecca for businessmen. The availability of own fuel and energy resources, a dense network of motor and rail roads, an outlet to the sea and high level of urbanization create unique conditions for the development of business.

Slovianohorsk

This is probably the most frequently visited corner of the area, where natural landscapes blend harmoniously with the 17th-19th century man-made Sviatohirsk Assumption Monastery. The Monastery is located on the slopes of the Siverskiy Donets River, a locality with the historic name of Sviati Hory (Sacred Hill). The caves of the Monastery are unique. Slovianohorsk is one of the best climatic resorts in Ukraine. The medicinal climatic conditions of this locality were known some 100 years ago.

Dnipropetrovska Oblast

It is located in the Steppe Region on both banks of the Dnipro. This is one of the country’s largest industrial regions. The trademarks of its enterprises are known in dozens of countries. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is a land where the historical and cultural heritage of the Ukrainian Cossacks is carefully preserved, a land, where the Cossack Sich was situated. There are 7 State museums and preserves in the oblast.

Dnipropetrovsk

It is a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre of Ukraine with a population of more than 1 mln. Dnipropetrovsk is a city of parks and squares, interesting architectural monuments and picturesque Dnipro embankments. Expositions of the Dnipropetrovsk Museum of History named after D. Yavornytskiy, with its stock of more than 220 displays, tell about the history of this land from ancient times to our days.

Travelling about the oblast tourists will pay a visit to one of the Zaporizhian Siches, the grave of Ivan Syrko, the Commander of the Zaporizhian Army, as well as to many other historical places of the oblast connected with the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks.

Petrykivka

This cosy town is more than 200 years old. It is one of the most famous centres of applied decorative art in Ukraine. Petrykivka crasftsmen have made the oblast world famous. Tourists take home many souvenirs made by them: dishes, boxes, and vases painted with the vivid Petrikivka ornamentation, soft original toys and painted samovars.
