Central and Northern Oblast of Ukraine

Kyivska Oblast

It is located in the central part of Ukraine on the right and left bank of the full-flowing Dnipro River — Slavutych. The oblast, like Kyiv, has many famous historical, cultural and natural monuments.

Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskiy

The city is first mentioned in the Ageement of Rus with Byzantine (907), as one of the three biggest towns of the Kyivan State. Taking into account the historic, artistic and scientific value of the monuments of history and culture, a historical and cultural preserve has been created and functions in the city, in which more than 20 museums are open for tourists, including the Open Air Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life, a unique Museum of Bread, etc. There are also interesting monuments of history and architecture in Vyshhorod, as well as in the villages of Trypillia, Sulymivka and Antonivka.

Bila Tserkva

An ancient city spread out on the picturesque banks of the Ros River. The most visited spot of the city is the Oleksandria Dendrological Park, which was laid upon the orders of Count Ksavery Branitsky, Hetman of Poland and Russian General for his young wife Alexandria Engelgardt. Architect D. Botani and landscape gardener A. Stenge worked on this park from 1793 to 1795. It boasts of more than 600 species of exotic trees and shrubs.

Cherkaska Oblast

It is located in the central forest-steppe region, along the central part of the Dnipro. There are 19 State museums, 6 preserves and 1 dendrological park on its territory.

Kaniv

This city is situated on the right bank of the Dnipro River. Taras Shevchenko, a great Ukrainian poet, artist, democrat and thinker was buried here in 1923. The Shevchenko National Preserve was built on the hill where he was laid to rest. The sights include various museum expositions, created on the basis of monuments of history, culture and nature, linked with the life and work of Taras Shevchenko.

Uman

There are probably few places in Ukraine, which can compare with the Sofiyivka Dendrological park in Uman, save for Oleksandria in Bila Tserkva. Both were laid at the same time (turn of the 19th century) and for the same reason. They were built by Polish barons for the women they loved. Count Potosky, head over heels in love with the beautiful Sofia, laid the park on the area of his residence in Uman. In five years, thanks to the efforts of thousands of serfs, a fantastically beautiful and unique park was laid out on the uninhabited bank of the river. The park was created by the Belgium architect L. Metzel, and landscape gardeners Zarembo, Ferres, Bondarenko and others, on an area covering 150 hectares. The park impresses visitors by its marvellous scenery, landscapes, man-made grottoes, waterfalls and architectural ensembles. The Sofiyivka Dendrological Park can be called unique.

Chyhyryn

Located in this city is a National Historical and Cultural Preserve, the materials of which tell about the life and activity of Hetman Bogdan Khmelnytskiy, an outstanding political and military figure of Ukraine, and the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Included in the Preserve are monuments of the village of Subotiv, where the Hetman spent his childhood. The memorial sites in the city of Holodniy Yar are linked with the liberation movement of the Ukrainian people.

Vinnytska Oblast

It is located in the forest-steppe region of right-bank Ukraine, running through the territory of which are the full-flowing Desna and South Buh rivers. The oblast can rightly be called a land of beautiful palace-park ensembles. There are 5 State museums in the oblast.

Vinnytsia

This administrative, economic and cultural centre of the oblast is emerged in the greenery of parks and gardens. Many architectural ensembles of churches, cathedrals and monasteries are a great tourist attraction.

Nemyriv

The city is famous for its 19th century unique palace-park complex. The Palace was built in the neo-classical style, surrounded by a picturesque park, which has some 80 species of trees and shrubs. The memorial literary sites of the city are linked with the names of Nikolai Nekrasov, Russian poet democrat, who was born here, and Marko Vovchok, the Ukrainian authoress.

Tulchyn

This city was one of the centres of the Decembrist movement in Tsarist Russia. The exposition of the Museum of the History of the Decembrist Movement tells about this period.
The Pototsky Palace (1757) was built in Tulchyn according to the project of Delacroix. It is the best example of the classicism style in Ukraine.

Stryzhavka

In this village there stands a monument on the common grave of war prisoners from many countries destroyed by the fascists in 1943 at the construction site of Werewolf Headquarters of Hitler and the ruins of this structure.

Boating

People, who are fond of active rest and travel, can go on a seven-day trip on inflated rafts along the South Buh, one of the biggest and full-flowing rivers of Ukraine, the banks of which are densely populated, and the villages along the banks give way to fields, pastures, groves and abundant Vinnytsia fruit orchards.

Chernihivska Oblast

It is located in the northern part of Ukraine in the Ukrainian Polissia Region, in thick maple, linden and oak forests. There are many picturesque and unique places in Polissia, many of which are very impressive by their primordiality. There are 26 State museums and historical and cultural preserves in this oblast.

Chernihiv

This city is one of the oldest in Ukraine. Situated in the city is a State Historical and Cultural Preserve made up of many monuments of architecture of different epochs: Cathedral of Our Saviour and Holy Transfiguration (11th century), one of the most ancient temples of Kyivan Rus, Sts. Borys and Hlib Cathedral (12th century), Church of Good Friday (11th-13th c.c.), a complex of buildings of the Yelytsky Assumption Monastery (11th-17th c.c.), complex of buildings of the Iliinsk Trinity Monastery (11th-17th c.c.), with the Antoniev caves (11th century) and other monuments. Near Chernihiv is the city of Batyryn, where in different years of the 17th-18th centuries stood the residence of Ukrainian Hetmans. Here one see the monuments of the “Hetman Capital” State Historical and Cultural Preserves.

Novhorod-Siverskiy

This city appeared in the 10th century, as one of the fortresses of Kyivan Rus. The Novhorod-Siverskiy “Tale of Igor’s Host” State Historical and Cultural Museum-Preserve, has 22,000 display items, including the nature study museum and monuments of architecture, the most famous of which is Our Saviour and Holy Transfiguration Monastery (12th-13th c.c.), and others.

Trostianets

The Trostianets Dendrological Preserve is situated in this picturesque town, founded by I. Skoropatskiy, a descendant of the Hetman of Right-Bank Ukraine, who was buried here. The landscape ensemble consists of 1700 species of different trees and shrubs, and the collection of 92 species of coniferous trees. The famous oak grove can boast of trees which are 300 years old.
The village of Sokyryntsi (19th century estate of L. Lalahan) and the township of Kachanivka where the Kachanivka Historical and Cultural Preserve is located, also have beautiful landscape complexes.

Poltavska Oblast

Located in the picturesque right bank lowlands of the Dnipro River, this unique region, glorified by many famous writers, is one of the outstanding centres of the Ukrainian national culture. There are 15 State museums in Poltavska Oblast.

Poltava

This city is connected with the names of many famous writers and poets. Poltava, cosy and hospitable, is known for its 17th-20th c.c. architectural monuments, picturesque streets, especially in spring, when the cherry trees are in bloom and the nightingales sing. The expositions of the State Poltava Battlefield Museum of History and Culture tell about the famous battle of the Russian troops under Peter I against Swedish King Charles XII and Ukrainian Cossack Hetman Mazepa.
While in Poltava, tourists can visit the museum of Ivan Kotliarevskiy, the classic of Ukrainian literature, museums of nature study and art. Many memorial sites in the oblast are connect ed with the names of the great writer Nikolai Gogol.

Velyki Sorochyntsi

The Gogol Literary Memorial Museum Preserve is located in this village, the birth place of the writer. Those visiting this village in autumn will have the opportunity to see the boisterous Sorochyntsi Fair. People in the villages and towns for miles around bring their wares to this fair. But this is not just a place for trade. People come here to show themselves and have a look at others. This is a joyful holiday after a busy summer season.

Myrhorod

If there exists a paradise in Ukraine, created for peace of mind, this place is Myrhorod. First of all, it is a unique resort with a rich source of mineral water. The names of many famous people are connected with this city — Gogol, Shevchenko, the Decembrist brothers-Muravyov-Apostolov, poet Derzhavin, Ukrainian classic Panas Myrniy, Georgian classic David Gurmaishvili...
And naturally we cannot but mention the world renown articles of folk masters, which were purchased by the best museums in the world. These include ceramics from the town of Opyshnia, Poltava and Reshetylivka embroidery, wood carved wares, woollen carpets from Lubny and the famous Poltava porcelain.
